One of my favorite shops in the world is Joel & Son Fabrics, in Church Street London, off the Edgware Road. It's an absolute Aladdin's Cave. Even people who can't thread a needle feel inspired when they walk into Joel's. The range is incredible. It's like a pre-catwalk show as they have all the fabrics that are used by the designers. The service is wonderful. Although the staff are very knowledgeable, and deal with people who can afford to spend £100s per metre on fabric, if you walk in and say " I want a metre of this and a metre of that", they'll still make you feel important. I do enjoy sewing, as it's so totally different to what I do all day. But when I walk into Joel's I feel I could buy some of the fabrics just to look at them. The interior is huge - it's four shops rolled into one. And it's crowded with all different fabrics.

But all the staff know where everything is. And the joy is you can wander around, not really knowing what you are looking for and then something catches your eye and you are inspired, Of course, if you haven't the time to browse, you can always ask the staff and they will bring you whatever it is you want.
